Registering for college classes can be a nightmare, especially with online course registration. Here are some tips to beat the system and get the classes you need!

College class registration has always been difficult. College students used to wait in line for hours at the registrar's office with registration form in hand. Now that college course online registration has become widespread, there's no more long lines at the registrar's office. However, there are new problems for college students, and still no guarantee that you'll get into the courses you want and need.

Should it be this difficult for college students to get into classes? Of course not, but that's the way it is at many schools, especially large research institutions where undergraduate education is not the top priority. So to get into the classes you need, be prepared to work the college course online registration system.

Here are some online college course registration survival tips!

  1. Do not delay. Register now, or as soon as you can. Find out the earliest possible time that you will be allowed to register, and snatch it. If you think registration is difficult, can you imagine what late registration is like? Be sure you have your registration form, registration code, and anything else you need to register for your classes.
  2. Do your research ahead of time. Talk to your advisor. Read the course catalog carefully. Find out what courses you need ahead of time, and registration will be less painful.
  3. Have backup classes ready. If you don't get into all of your first choices (and you probably won't), have a list of backup courses ready. You can always register for the backup courses and drop them if you get into your first choices.
  4. Be flexible. If you really want to get into a class, be flexible about time. 8:00 am classes are not ideal, but they're much easier to get into than a popular class at a desirable hour. Same with late afternoon Friday classes. Also, be flexible about the instructor. Professor X might be the popular choice, but if you're willing to take the class with Professor Y, you're more likely to get in. If you can be flexible about how your schedule is set up, that will also help you get the classes you need. It's awesome to get all your classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, especially if you work or are juggling other priorities. But this might not be feasible.
  5. Find some less popular classes. Look through the course catalog and find courses that everyone's not dying to get into. You may find some gems. For that matter, when you're choosing a major, consider choosing one that's less popular so you can get into classes more easily.
  6. If you don't get into a class, find out your options. Will the professor be willing to override you manually into the class, or put you on a waiting list? It doesn't hurt to ask. If you're a graduate senior who needs a class to graduate, let the professor and the department know. Be sure to be polite to the professors or they're not going to help you.
  7. Play the computer waiting game. If you didn't get into your first choices right away, be persistent. Log onto the online registration system, and do so frequently. Wait until a class you need opens up. Grab the slot immediately. Yes, it sucks that class registration has come down to this, but your classmates are all doing this too, so give it a shot.
  8. Do the switcheroo. Find someone who's dropping the class you want. Go with them to a computer lab or somewhere where there are multiple computers. As soon as they drop the class, grab it. Don't delay, because there's people sitting at their computers waiting for a spot to open up. Or see if you can do this switcheroo manually at the registrar's office.

Believe me, I know this is frustrating, and it shouldn't be this way. But in the meantime, be persistent and work the online course registration system. If nothing else, it's a sad but valuable life lesson in bureaucracy.
