Should female college students refer to themselves as college women instead of college girls? What do you think?

While referring to a group of friends on an informal occasion as girls is fine, I think that it is important for female college students to think of themselves as women--adults with rights and responsibilities--and to ask others to use the same sort of language. I also prefer women to ladies as ladies concotes a patriarchal past we need to get beyond.

I've been interviewing senior anthropologists and the tales they have of the discrimination, the not allowing the wife of married male teaching assistants to teach in the same department and the general assumption that women weren't as smart as men, really reminded me of how important the fight to be taken seriously and to be granted the same opportunities has been.

"College Women" - definitely! The college / university learning experience today finds students from 18 (or even younger at times) to those considered senior citizens - 55-years+.

Even more so "College Women" denotes professionalism and a sense of seriousness and purpose.

Yeah, I think we need to not forget how hard women have fought to be taken seriously in the classroom and the workplace!
