» Feature Writer Barbara Pytel - thank you

Thank you, Lynn, for pointing this out. Students often think that a college will accept every college credit class they take. Part of the problem is that many school counselors assume this is so and the junior colleges also affirm this thinking. And, quite often it is true. But, I have found that the higher the level the college, the more selective they are. I tell students that the only way to be sure is to get it in writing from the college you plan to attend prior to taking the class. Unfortunately, most don't know where that will be when they sign up for the classes. I have heard of cases where an entire year of college credits were rejected by a Level 2 school. Reason: The credits were earned at a Level 3 college and a junior college. Not considered equal rigor. Even a few words that differ in the course description can be enough to disqualify a class. Some colleges can really play hardball.

» Lynn1969 - College Credit Transfer

Barb: Luckily, total rejection of credits is rare. Most colleges will accept non-standard or non-core credits at least as elective credits. But, even so, there are likely to be limits on the number of electives a college/university will allow a student to transfer in. Or, students who feel they've gained sufficient knowledge in a subject can arrange to challenge a course and gain credit through testing. But the best advice for students is to stick with core courses when taking college courses through dual-enrollment. Thanks!
