» Lynn1969 - Nursing Programs/Nursing Shortages
Students interested in entering nursing programs--at any level--need to know that these programs tend to be highly competitive. Yes, there is a shortage of qualified nurses. But, there is also a shortage of spaces in nursing programs. Colleges/universities are limited (by space/resources) in the number of nursing students they can accept each year.-- posted by Lynn1969

Hi,
My daughter recently completed a B.S.N. degree at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA. You have the competitive part down right. Everyone in the nursing program had been in National Honor Society in high school and were honor students in college. The rigor was so tough that several of these honor students were afraid of not passing all the classes. On the campus visit, we were told that the nursing program was the most rigorous on campus, even more than pre-med. However, nurses can determine if someone lives or dies. Someone could die if nurses did not know when to call the doctor or did not accurately monitor millions of dollars in equipment properly. It is not for the academically challenged.

Thanks for bringing this interesting issue to your Ask Lynn column. I'm going to send it to my niece, who will graduate next year and wants to go into nursing. She's an honor student, so she should be able to handle the rigors.
I didn't realize it was so competitive, though. I guess the colleges aren't able to keep up with the demand for those who want to attend.
Barb - you are right - nursing is a very critical profession and it shouldn't be for the academically challenged. Maybe the difficulty getting into nursing programs is a good thing!
