U.S. Scholarship Opportunities for Latino & Latina College Students

Looking for financial aid for your college education? Here's information about some of the many scholarships available to Hispanic American students.

Many college students aren't aware of just how much scholarship money is out there. Put some effort into searching for college scholarships, and you just might find yourself with hundreds or thousands of dollars of financial aid for your education! For Hispanic students, there are many awards available. Some are local scholarships that are awarded only to students who live in a particular geographic region, so check your high school guidance department, college advising office, or local Hispanic organization for information. There also all scholarships available to Hispanic students with specific majors.

Here are some of the scholarships available to Hispanic students from all geographic regions of the U.S. and for all majors.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund. (877-HSF-INFO) The HSF has a National College Scholarship Program for Hispanic students who have at least a 3.0 GPA and attend a community college, a four-year college, or graduate school. Applications will be considered between August 1 and October 15, 2007. Scholarships range from $1000 to $5000, based on a number of factors including academic achievement and financial need. The HSF also co-sponsors scholarships with a variety of corporations for students who have specific majors.

Hispanic College Fund. (800-644-4223) The HCF Scholars Program offers scholarships to undergraduate Hispanic college students (and those who are enrolled for the following semester) who have at least a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need. Online applications will be accepted starting December 15, 2007. Awards range from $500 - $5000.

Hispanic Heritage Foundation Youth Awards. (202-861-9797) .These grants are awarded to Hispanic high school seniors who are role models of excellence in their community. Winners are chosen based on academic excellence, community service, and an essay about their heritage. The top winners receive $5000 and a laptop computer. In addition, gold, silver, and bronze medallion recipients who receive $3000, $2000, and $1000.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. (800-EXCEL-DC) The CHCI awards scholarships to Hispanic undergraduate and graduate students who regularly participate in public or community service and who have financial need. Awards range from $1000 to $5000, and undergraduate students also receive a laptop computer.

La Unidad Latina Foundation. This charitable organization awards scholarships to Hispanic undergraduate and graduate students who have completed at least one year of school. To qualify, students must have a GPA between 2.8 and 3.6. Applications are accepted twice a year for the February and October deadlines. Awards range from $250 to $1000.

The Sallie Mae Fund. This organization offers the "First in My Family Scholarship Program," which awards scholarships to Hispanic students who are the first in their family to attend college. They must also demonstrate financial need and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Awards range from $500 to $5000. Applications will be accepted in January 2008.
