Need gift ideas for the college students on your shopping list? Here's some ideas for luxury items and useful gadgets students can't usually afford and will appreciate.

Is there a college student on your holiday shopping list? Here are some suggestions for useful and fun presents to make a college student's life easier! College students: do you have a suggestion for what you'd like for Christmas or Hanukkah? Leave it in the discussion below, and check out these suggestions for affordable gifts for your college friends.

Useful household items for dorm room or college apartment. Most college students don't have a lot of money, so the last place their money goes is on nice household items. College students would just as soon buy things secondhand or raid their parents' linen closet. Bring a little luxury in a college student's life by buying something both functional and high quality. Some ideas:

  • High thread count sheets, or flannel sheets.
  • A fluffy, matching set of towels.
  • Down pillows.
  • A very cozy blanket.
  • A good reading lamp.
  • A decent coffee maker or espresso maker.
  • A crock pot.
  • Nice picture frames.
  • A small ice cream maker.
  • Goofy retro decorations, like a lava lamp.
  • Cooking basics for a student's first apartment: measuring cups and spoons, a sharp knife, a cookie/pizza sheet, an all-in-one kitchen set.

Entertainment gifts. Always appreciated by a bored and broke Generation Y college student. Some suggestions:

  • A computer game or video game.
  • DVDs (see my suggestions for funny study break movies).
  • A subscription to NetFlix or similar service.
  • A gift certificate for digital music.
  • Board games for parties, like Trivial Pursuit or Apples to Apples.
  • A universal remote control.
  • A homemade mix CD (see my suggestions for study break songs).
  • A TiVo or other Digital Video Recorder (they're cheaper than they used to be).
  • iPod or MP3 accessories, like speakers or a leather case.
  • A remote control car.

Clothing gifts. Most college students don't have a lot of extra money around for a trip to the mall, so nice clothing will be appreciated. When buying clothing for a student, remember to keep it low maintenance; if it needs ironing or hand-washing, it might not be worth the trouble. Some ideas:

  • A modest bath robe and slippers (since almost all college students have roommates).
  • Warm socks (unless the student's in Miami).
  • Warm gloves (see above).
  • A fleece pullover.
  • A college sweatshirt.
  • A stylish hoodie.
  • Fun flip flops.
  • A quality but low-maintenance button-up shirt..
  • Clothing with the letters of a student's fraternity or sorority.
  • Department store makeup.
  • A gift certificate to the student's favorite clothing store.

Useful student supplies. Things every student can use around campus, including:

  • A sturdy water bottle.
  • Nice pens.
  • A creative cell phone case.
  • A college survival guide book.
  • A gift certificate to a book store.
  • A good dictionary or thesaurus.
  • Accessories for a student with a bike, like a helmet, light, or lock.

Every college student will appreciate a gift card to their nearest grocery store or target. I live in an apartment with 3 roommates and have realized that the last thing I want to spend my money on is ralph's or target. So help out the broke college student and give the gift of groceries haha =] Another good idea: Care baskets. Throw in some mac n cheese a couple of notes for when we get homesick, hot chocolate and a cute t shirt or something. You can't go wrong with these ideas. Good luck!
