Freshman New Year's Resolutions

Freshmen, start your spring semester college and out on the right foot with these 2007 New Year's Resolutions

Dec 20, 2006 Naomi Rockler-Gladen

Hope your first semester of college went well, freshmen! This is a good time to evaluate what you need to work on. Here are some suggestions for New Year's Resolutions.

So, you're a freshman, and you've made it past the first semester of your freshman year. Congratulations! Your first semester may well be your most difficult, because you have to learn how to be a college student along with everything else. So now that the first semester of your freshman year is over, take a step back and ask yourself how things went. Do you need help with academics? Do you need to get out of your room and get more involved with campus life? Did you gain the Freshman Fifteen?

Are there a few things you'd like to change? This would be a great time to make some realistic New Year's Resolutions. Don't overdo it, and don't try to change everything at once, or you'll drop the resolutions by Valentine's Day. Here are a list of suggestions for Student New Year's Resolutions, and just for you, here's a list of suggestions for Freshman New Year's Resolutions. Pick and choose a few from the list that apply to your experiences.

New Year's Resolutions for Freshmen

  • Resolve to stay away from dorm drama as much as possible, and to not cause dorm drama.
  • Resolve to get more sleep. Aim for an extra hour a night. Limit late night party or gab sessions.
  • Study more. Choose a realistic number of additional hours a week you think you should be studying, and stick to that.
  • Resolve not to miss more than two sessions of each of your classes all semester.
  • Resolve to meet all of your deadlines, no matter what.
  • Stop procrastinating. Resolve to not wait until the last minute to write papers or study for tests.
  • If you need help with school, resolve to find help. Find out what kinds of programs or study skills centers your school offers for struggling students, and take advantage of them.
  • Resolve to visit each of your professor's office hours at least once, and to visit their offices whenever you need help.
  • Be nicer to your professors. Don't play games, or chit chat in class, or do anything else to annoy your professor.
  • Be nicer to your roommate. Pick up after yourself. Turn down your music. Don't make catty remarks.
  • Don't let your roommate push you around. Let him or her know if you are upset about something, and try to work it out.
  • Join a new club or activity. Try out a few until you find one that suits you. If you're interested, rush a fraternity or sorority.
  • If you've been cooped up in your room too much, leave it. Concentrating on your studies is awesome, but don't forget to enjoy college life a little.
  • Make some new friends. If you've been only hanging around your high school friends or your new friends on your dormitory floor, expand your circle.
  • Are your finances stretched? Think about your spending habits over the last semester and budget your money better.
  • Are you having problems with your parents now that you're away at school? Work on communicating better with your parents (here are some suggestions).
