Ready to load up the car and start your new life in your dorm room? Here's a list of all the things you're going to need.

Moving into a dorm room is a big step! Although you're probably thrilled to be getting some new independence, moving out is a difficult rite of passage for both parents and students. One thing that can make the transition a little easier is to make your dorm room more homey and cozy. After a long day of classes, it will feel nice to have a comfortable place to relax. And no, you don't have to spend a fortune to have a nice dorm room. A few odds and ends from home, a few inexpensive purchases, and you can make your room delightful.

So what do you need for your college dorm room? The things you need fall into several categories:

  1. Dorm room necessities. These are the things you can't do without-- an alarm clock, linens, stuff to clean yourself with, flip flops to protect your feet from the slimy shower floors, and so forth. You can buy these kinds of things near campus, but it may be cheaper and easier to bring them with you. Here's a complete list of dorm room necessities.
  2. Handy stuff for your dorm room. These are things you don't truly need, but that will make your life more convenient and your living quarters more pleasant. This includes an area rug, mementos from home, and, of course, a mini refrigerator. Here's a list of handy stuff to bring to your dorm room.
  3. A computer. In this day and age, a computer has become a student necessity. The good news is this: computers are way cheaper than they used to be, and you probably don't need the latest technology to meet your needs as a student. If you can afford a laptop, these can be very convenient, but there are big advantages of desktop computers as well. Here's a student guide to buying a laptop versus buying a desktop.
  4. Dorm room decorations. Dorm rooms are pretty bland paces-- white walls, cold floors, and curtains that may have been purchases in 1948. With a little creativity, you can decorate your dorm room well-- and don't worry, you don't need to be Martha Stewart to pimp your dorm room. Here are some dorm room decorating ideas.
  5. Dorm room furniture. No, you're not going to have room for a living room set, but a decent lamp or a bookcase can really jazz up the room. Here are some dorm room furniture ideas.
