College Course Recommendations

Useful courses undergraduate students should consider

Oct 14, 2006 Naomi Rockler-Gladen

Looking for college classes that will offer valuable knowledge, aid in your career choice, and pique your interest? Here are five recommendations.

Choosing college classes can be overwhelming. After you take the courses your school requires and the classes that are required for your major, what should you take? Below is a list of classes that all college students should consider. Some of these classes will be useful in your career, while others are valuable because they offer useful knowledge. And some might just be fun.

  • Public speaking. No matter what you choose to do for a living, this may be the one of the most valuable classes you take. Employers want people with good verbal communication skills, and most people don’t have them, so if you speak well, you’re at an advantage. Plus writing speeches teaches you organizational skills that will help with your writing, along with creativity. Scared about public speaking? If it helps, you’re not alone. Studies show that many people fear public speaking more than anything else, even death! So muster up some courage and take the class; you’ll be a whole lot less scared when you find out speaking isn’t that difficult.
  • Contemporary history. If you want to understand current events, the best thing you can do is take history classes that cover the last 50 years or so. Take two classes: one about world history and one about the contemporary history of your own country. Does history bore you? Don’t worry, history classes in college usually are much more interesting than high school classes. Find a good teacher, and you’ll find these classes will be among the most relevant ones you take in college.
  • Introduction to women’s studies. Women’s studies classes almost always are very liberal, but take this class regardless of your politics. Even if you don’t agree with everything, it will challenge you to think in new ways. Women’s studies classes are usually very interactive and discussion-oriented, and student participation is prized. Men, you should take this class too! Keep an open mind and listen to what female students are saying, and you will have a valuable experience.
  • Theater, art, or music appreciation. When will you ever get an opportunity again to become literate in these art forms?
  • Stress management. If your school offers this class, take it! This class will be invaluable in college and throughout life.
